Octogenarian physician awarded Doctorate

Proving the fact that age never deter the zeal for education, an 81-year-old Physician and General Medical Practitioner, who worked for his doctorate by blending medicine and Engineering was awarded the doctorate degree in the e-Convocation held at NIT Tiruchy on Saturday.

Dr G Ganapathy who retired as Joint Director of Medical Services, Government of Tamil Nadu in 1997, obtained his MBBS degree in 1964 and his MD from Madurai Medical College in 1968. He has served in the headquarters hospital of every district of his days and possesses valuable experience as a Physician. During his service as a medical Physician in NIT Tiruchy he was motivated by the research carried out in NIT, Tiruchy in the bio-medical field. He sought enrollment for the Doctoral Programme in 2015 and the senate of NIT, Tiruchy approved his candidature as a special case. Dr G Ganapathy has coupled his vast experience in the medical field with the latest Engineering Tools, viz., Machine Learning and Artificial Neural Networks and developed predictive tools for health care. Dr G Ganapathy converted his research experience and the urge for learning into an interdisciplinary work.

 Dr Ganapathy is very keen in filling the gap between physicians and engineers. Hence, the domains of medicine and Artificial Intelligence were brought together in his study. His research involves developing the detection models for the two important clinical conditions namely, breast cancer, and low back pain. He has done extensive research towards developing reliable machine learning models that facilitate mass screening of images using intelligent techniques and thereby enhancing the use of telemedicine.
