According to Wildlife Warden, Ramanathapuram, AS Marimuthu, the mammal was identified as ‘Bottleneck dolphin’. The marine mammal could have hit the rocky patches while moving to feed on fishes at shallow waters off Sangumal. There were also possibilities of a boat propeller hitting the dolphin. However, there’s not much external injury on the carcass, the Wildlife Warden said. Mandapam Range Officer Venkatesh said it was a male dolphin weighed about 120 kilos with a length of 172 cm and width of 53 cm. The carcass was found at around 11 am. A small portion around its nose was found injured. With the aid of veterinary surgeons, post mortem was done on the carcass and buried, he said.
