2,886 new cases: TN tally shows a declining trend

The number of COVID-19 cases in the State has gone below 3,000 after four months, recording 2,886 new cases on Saturday.

Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan, however, cautioned that though the State is registering a lesser number of positive cases, testing about 80,000 samples on a daily basis, it needs to remain extra vigilant.

“We should not lower testing or fever camps and fever surveillance. Instead also involve traders’ associations and resident welfare associations and in rural areas self-help groups and habitation level committees to ensure that wearing of masks, physical distancing and handwashing messages and SOPs in workplace and activities is followed up,” said his instruction to the district Collectors.

As on Saturday, the total number of COVID cases in the State has reached 7,06,136. With 4,024 more getting discharged from several hospitals across the State, the active cases have come down to 31,787. As many as 779 cases were reported in Chennai, while 287 cases 19 were reported in Coimbatore and 169 in Chengalpattu.

As many as 35 COVID deaths were reported in State on Saturday, taking the total toll to 10,893.
