Select leaders of AIADMK to meet this weekend

A section of leaders of the ruling AIADMK, which is embroiled in a heated internal debate over the Chief Minister candidate for the upcoming Assembly polls scheduled in 2021, is set to meet this weekend to discuss the contentious issue.

“The schedule and the venue will be finalised on Friday,” informed AIADMK sources told DT Next. Multiple AIADMK sources confirmed that at least two such crucial meetings are on the cards between the supporters of Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam ahead of the self-imposed October 7 deadline. “This unnecessary deadline was the brainchild of AIADMK joint convenor K P Munusamy and it should have been avoided. There is every possibility for the stalemate to continue even after October 7 and there are also renewed talks happening with rebel AMMK regarding merger,” the senior said.

Meanwhile senior AIADMK minister D Jayakumar on Thursday urged party seniors and State ministers not to comment on the issue. “Minister Dindigul C Sreenivasan is a senior party member, he should not have spoken on the issue creating a rift within the party. The Opposition is waiting for a chance to ridicule the ruling party. AIADMK functionaries should not pave way for political opportunists,” Jayakumar said during a media interaction here on Thursday.
