In the petition, Mohan Kumar from Mumoorthy Nagar claimed that his relative Anuradha (45), who was admitted in the general ward for asthma trouble on September 16, was shifted to ICU with ventilator support on September 21 after she developed complications.

On September 22, the ventilator failed to work due to a power cut resulting in her death around evening, he alleged. The woman was making a living with her three daughters by selling snacks on a pushcart after the death of her husband 10 years ago.

The petitioner urged the Collector to initiate action against the doctors for their negligence and sought compensation.

Tirupur GH Superintendent Dr Gopalakrishnan, however, denied the allegation. “These are baseless allegations. It is not known which ICU ward the woman was undergoing treatment. I will anyway inquire what exactly happened,” he said.

Meanwhile, members of DYFI staged a protest in front of the Collector’s office, demanding that COVID-19 results should be announced without delay, increase testing and bed strength, and provide uninterrupted power supply to the government hospital.

They also sought to provide better drinking and toilet facilities in the hospital.

In a similar protest, the members of Tamil Nadu Ilaignar Katchi staged a road blockade in front of the government hospital to protest the deaths due to power failure.
