Nearly 10 per cent of Thursday’s 5,560 cases from Kovai
Tamil Nadu on Thursday registered 5,560 new coronavirus cases taking the tally to 5,25,420 while the toll stood at 8,618 with 59 more fatalities.

Chennai recorded 992 cases, while Coimbatore recorded a spike again with the number of infections reaching 520 on Thursday. Salem recorded a total of 291 cases, while Chengalpattu, Tiruvalluvar and Cuddalore recorded 283, 239 and 206 cases of COVID-19 respectively. Of the total positive cases, Chennai accounted for 1, 52, 567 cases.
Of the total deaths, 23 were from private hospitals and 36 patients succumbed to COVID-19 in government hospitals. Among the deceased, seven did not have any co-morbidities while the other 52 had several underlying health conditions. Those dead include a 40-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man.
In the past 24 hours, a total of 5,524 more patients were discharged from several hospitals across the State and the total recoveries in Tamil Nadu, post treatment, was is 4,70,192. As many as 84,524 samples were tested and cumulatively 62,17,923 specimens have been examined.
Also, active cases in Tamil Nadu stood at 46,610.
