Plea challenges pass mark for students with arrears

Even as a heated debate is on over the correctness in Tamil Nadu government cancelling arrear examinations for college students this year, the Madras High Court has been moved seeking to quash the government order on August 26, providing relief to students with arrears.

The plea, which is likely to come before a division bench comprising Justice MM Sundresh and Justice R Hemalatha soon, had contended that the University Grants Commission had announced some relief to current semester students owing to the pandemic situation. But the TN government, going one step further, had applied the same yardstick to those with arrears.

Noting that such a move would not only affect the morale of meritorious students but also lead to an unwise decision to award degree to a student who had failed in some subjects, the plea stressed that the guidelines and relief announced by the All India Council for Technical Education while not compromising on safety and health of all the stakeholders have insisted on sanctity and quality of examinations.

The plea moved by advocate B Ramkumar Adityan, citing the relaxations offered by TN government subsequent to Unlock-4, contended that the relaxation had permitted the resumption of all operation with 100 per cent workforce while adhering to the Standard Operating Procedures and hence the arrear exams, the fees for which has also been collected should be held.

Director of Government Examinations has announced supplementary Examination for plus-two, SSLC, ESLC and Diploma in Elementary Education in September. Hence, there is no bar to conduct exams for college students as per guidelines issued by the Centre and the State, the plea contended.
