5,986 new Covid cases in Tamil Nadu, 3 lakh cured
The fresh infections have pushed the number of active COVID-19 cases in the state to 53,283, while 3,01,913 people have recovered from the disease so far.

Tamil Nadu on Thursday recorded 5,986 new cases of COVID-19, including 19 imported cases from other states and countries. With this, the total number of cases in Tamil Nadu has reached 3,61,435.
The number of patients who have been cured of Covid has reached 3.01 lakh in Tamil Nadu since the pandemic outbreak in March. On Thursday, 5,742 patients were cured and discharged from hospital. The rate of patients getting cured is at 83.5 per cent.
A total of 116 deaths were reported in Tamil Nadu, of which 44 were in private hospitals and 72 in government hospitals. Maximum deaths were reported in Chennai and Coimbatore - 22 and 11 casualties respectively. The Tamil Nadu toll stands at 6,239. Of the total deaths, Chennai accounts for 2,537.
Currently, 53,283 persons are under treatment (including isolation) in the state.
While Chennai continued its spike and reported 1,177 cases, senior officials from the Health Department said relaxations in the movement of people across the State has contributed to the increased cases in the city and this could see a further surge as the number of returnees are also on the rise.
Chengalpattu recorded highest number of cases after Chennai with 462 cases on Thursday. Coimbatore continued to report high cases with 397 new ones followed by Tiruvallur with 393 while Salem had 359 cases of COVID-19. Several other districts including Cuddalore, Kancheepuram and Theni reported more than 200 cases of COVID-19 on Thursday.
The active cases in Chennai stands at 12,287 while 1,132 persons were discharged on Thursday.
Tamil Nadu has tested 39,88,599 samples and 38,51,411 people so far, according to the media bulletin issued by the Directorate of Public Health.
The number of Covid-19 cases between the age of 0-12 has risen to 17,256 in the state.
Tamil Nadu is among eight states that has recorded over one lakh cases in India. Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi, West Bengal and Bihar being the other states. Together, these 8 states account for 77.87% of the country's total tally.
India currently has the third-highest number of coronavirus cases in the world.
