Lockdown quadruples e-files in Southern Railway

Complying with social distancing norms not only has health benefits, but has also helped cut cost and reduce carbon footprint in Southern Railway (SR). The number of digital files of SR offices on NIC e-office platform has quadrupled during the past four months (April-July 2020), taking it from 9,964 files before lockdown to 43,447 e-files by the end of July.

The number of e-receipts generated by users of SR has also increased approximately three times during this period. Also, 1,414 new e-office users were registered during this period, a statement from SR said.

The lockdown and efforts to minimise physical contact at the workplace has pushed the usage of digital platform, replacing the manual filing system, it added. With rapid increase in digital filing, Southern Railway is on the fast-track to adapting paperless office culture, which would not only save operational cost but also reduce its carbon footprint, the statement added.

Due to the availability of e-office platforms, most of the file work could be done smoothly without physical presence in offices.

Tiruchchirappalli Division has become a pioneer in e-office by successfully completing 100 per cent digitisation of records and uploading all physical documents into e-office database by July 31. There are 1,05,110 users in 106 units of Indian Railways (Zone HQ, Divisions, PU, CTI, etc.). As on August 7, 1,768,780 e-receipts and 5,71,665 e-files have been created.
