Ramanathapuram rains break 83-year-old record for August
Several parts of the State, including Pamban in Ramanathapuram, saw more than normal rainfall in 24 hours, breaking 83-year-old records, according to weather experts. The city saw thunder and rains last night.

According to weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs the page Tamil Nadu Weatherman, the town of Pamban in Ramanathapuram saw 121.8 mm of rainfall on August 9, breaking the highest amount of rainfall in 24 hours and the highest monthly rainfall. Pamban last saw 73.9 mm of rainfall on August 31, 1937, and the highest amount of rainfall in August was 103.6 mm, recorded in 1910.
“Pamban in Ramanathapuram is one of the driest places in India during the southwest monsoon. The average rainfall in Pamban in August is just 15 mm. This belt along with Thoothukudi is the driest in the whole country during the southwest monsoon. During southwest monsoon, rains rarely happen in this belt due to strong westerlies and convergence rarely shifts in Thoothukudi to Pamban belt,” he said.
Meanwhile, Chennai got good rain on Sunday, with Meenambakkam recording 61.7 mm and Nungambakkam recording 15.8 mm of rainfall. The maximum recorded weather was 30.2 and 31 degrees Celsius respectively, while the minimum recorded weather was 23.6 and 24.6 degrees Celsius respectively.
In the districts, The Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Pudukottai, Nagapattinam, Karaikal, Vellore, Tiruchy, Salem, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Kanyakumari saw heavy rainfall on Sunday. According to the director of the Regional Metrological Department, Chennai, S Balachandran, “These rains will continue across the city for another day or two. Moderate rain is likely to occur at many places over Ariyalur, Perambalur, Madurai, Sivaganga, Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar districts.”
