City’s neighbouring dists record over 1K cases, 70 fatalities in Tamil Nadu
The spike in the number of fresh COVID-19 cases continued to rise with the State reporting 4,985 positive cases of which 4,930 cases are local while the rest are returnees from other States/countries. With Monday’s tally, the State has recorded 1,75,678 cases.

While Chennai is witnessing a mild increase in the number of COVID-19 cases with the city reporting 1,298 cases on Monday, the neighbouring districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu reported an alarming rise with 454, 329 and 354 new cases over the past 24 hours. The combined tally of these three districts has crossed 1,100 cases in a day.
Officials at the State Health Department, however, claimed that the situation in the city is under control as there is no significant increase in the cases.Several other districts saw a surge in the new cases on Monday. At least 200 cases were reported in Thoothukudi while Coimbatore, Madurai, Tenkasi, Theni, Tiruvannamalai, Tiruneveli, Vellore and Virudhunagar also reported more than 100 cases on Monday. Meanwhile, Madurai reported a significant dip with just 106 new cases during the same period. With 70 more deaths, the death toll in the State has reached 2,551 so far. Chennai reported 22 deaths on Monday alone. So far, 1,456 people have lost their lives to COVID-19 in the city alone. With 3,861 more individuals discharged from several hospitals across the State post recovery, the number of people who have recovered from the virus has risen to 1,21,776 so far. As of now, Tamil Nadu currently has 51,348 active cases.
Health Secy to be quarantined as wife, son contract virus
Health Secretary J Radhakrishnan is likely to undergo home quarantine for two weeks after his close family members test positive for COVID-19 on Monday.
Even as the Health Secretary continues to battle the COVID-19 pandemic on the forefront, his family members, including his wife and son, tested positive for the virus on Monday. They were admitted to the COVID-19 hospital at the King Institute in Guindy. The hospital authorities said that Radhakrishnan’s wife and his son are stable and treatment is under process. His father-in-law and mother-in-law are also said to have tested positive for the virus earlier.
