Chennai stable, spike in COVID-19 infections in other TN districts cause for concern

As many as 4,979 persons tested positive for coronavirus over the past 24 hours in Tamil Nadu while 4,059 Covid-19 patients were discharged from various hospitals, said the State Health Department on Sunday.

Chennai continued to see a decline in COVID-19 infections, as it recorded a marginally low caseload of 1,254 cases (out of 4,979), taking its total to 85,859. The active cases in the city stands at 15,042 while the total number of Covid-19 patients discharged stood at 1,189. 

According to data released by the Greater Chennai Corporation, Kodambakkam has the most number of corona positive patients seeking treatment and Royapuram, which is worst-hit among the 15 zones, has a higher number of recovered persons than other zones.

In a statement issued here, the state health department said 4,979 persons tested positive for coronavirus, taking the total tally of infected persons till date in Tamil Nadu to 1,70,693.

4,059 people have been discharged taking the total number of recovered cases to 1,17,915. The active cases of COVID 19 in the state stands at 50,294.

78 people have succumbed to the virus, taking the total death toll to 2,481. As many as 52,993 samples were tested today.

The second highly infected district was Chengalpattu with 306 new cases (9,658 total cases) followed by Thiruvallur (9,110 total cases) with 405 new cases. Madurai (8,251 total cases) and Kancheepuram (4,739) reported over 200 cases on Sunday alone.

Totally 19,32,492 samples were tested in the state. There are around 112 Covid-19 testing facilities in Tamil Nadu. The number of infected children in the age group 0-12 went up to 8,507.
