A Government Order said that following requests from academicians and other stakeholders, who were against the earlier order, the government has cancelled the proposal.

“Besides, even public opinion was taken into consideration to cancel the order,” it added. As per government’s official communication, employment opportunities will be less if Class 11 students are allowed to choose only three subjects and the old pattern of having four core subjects continue this year.

According to the earlier order, for instance, Science students could choose a combination of three subjects — Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry or Physics, Chemistry and Biology or Physics, Mathematics and Computer Science.

The government had earlier justified that by allowing students to take up only three subjects depending on their future studies, the stress they undergo would be reduced

Even Commerce students were also allowed to choose their combination of three core subjects. Welcoming the government’s decision, Tamil Nadu Teachers Association president P K Ilamaran said that the old pattern of subjects will have more job opportunities.

Echoing similar views, Dr N Vijayan Patron, Unified districts Self-Financing Schools Association said that the new group for Class 11 students will narrow down the options and choices for higher education besides creating an impact on future job avenues.

“A student who attempts to learn Physics and Chemistry without the elementary knowledge of Maths will suffer setback for complete understanding and therefore will resort to rote learning, which will be a serious impediment to clear NEET,” he added.
