On course correction, Tamil Nadu police to identify rogue cops
Following the Sathankulam incident, the State police headquarters has asked all the unit officers to identify police personnel under heavy mental stress and those who need behaviour correction in Tamil Nadu police.

“They will undergo counselling under a wellbeing programme,” a senior police official told this newspaper on Tuesday.
Officials believe that such a move would certainly give an image that department is serious about behaviour correction of rogue cops in the force.
“Yes, all unit officers are identifying personnel under heavy mental stress, due to various reasons, to undergo the programme,” the officer added.
Tiruchy range DIG, V Balakrishnan, who had already initiated the programme had sent as many as 80 police personnel for a one-month-long behaviour correction programme.
“We have selected them by employing various parameters. Those who face complaints from the public and those who have remarks against them from supervisory officers and special branch are also included in the list of those needing behavioural correction,” Balakrishnan told DT Next.
In a Facebook post, the DIG said: “We are removing 80 police personnel in Tiruchy police range who need behavioural correction to improve their interpersonal skill”.
They are taken off the duties involving direct public contact as their track record in that aspect was found wanting. They will be reintegrated into regular duties only after completing a specially designed course with cognitive behavioural therapy component to improve the way they deal with the public, the officer added.
Before inducting them into the regular duties their abilities will be reevaluated, Balakrishnan said.

All 80 police personnel, who hail from five districts under Tiruchy Range, will be reintegrated into regular duties only gradually after completing a specially designed course with CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) component to improve the way they deal with the public, the Facebook status of DIG (Tiruchy Range) V Balakrishnan stated. “They are taken off the duties involving direct public contact as their track record in that aspect is found wanting.”
According to the DIG, the process of identifying the police personnel belonging to Tiruchy, Pudukkottai, Karur, Perambalur and Ariyalur had started around one-and-a-half months ago and it intensified after the alleged custodial death of Sathankulam father-son duo P Jayaraj and J Bennicks.
It was based on the intelligence and ground report on behaviour towards the public that the errant cops were identified. Accordingly, as many as 49 police constables, 29 sub-inspectors and two inspectors were relieved of duty and asked to attend the CBT programme which is specially moduled for such police personnel, he added.
