Utmost care taken to ensure quality of liquor supplied in Tamil Nadu, Tasmac tells High Court

Tasmac Managing Director R Kirlosh Kumar made the submission in response to a plea questioning the quality of liquor supplied. The plea moved by R Kullupadaiyachi had sought display of maximum retail price (MRP) prominently at all State-run liquor shops and alleged that liquor was being sold at a premium since shops were reopened after the lockdown.

The official claimed that adequate instructions have been issued to display MRP list of the liquor sold, and added that a circular has been issued directing all senior regional managers, district managers, and special flying squad to conduct inspections rigorously with a target fixed for such inspections and submit daily reports on the number of shops inspected.

From April 2019 to March 2020, 9,329 MRP violations were booked, including 2,129 in Chennai, he added.

He noted that as per TN Prohibition Act, an excise supervisory officer in the cadre of Deputy Collector was appointed for every Indian made foreign spirit (IMFS) manufacturing unit to monitor the day-to-day activities there.

All Tasmac retail outlets were licensed under Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and the quality of IMFL and beer was certified by independent agencies that they adhered to the standards prescribed in the regulations laid down under Food Safety and Standards Act, he added. The bench comprising Justice R Subbiah and Justice Krishnan Ramasamy posted the plea for further hearing after two weeks.
