According to the farmers, due to the prompt release of water this year, kuruvai would be undertaken in an area of 3.5 lakh acre and also horticulture crops like banana, sugarcane, betel leaf and korai cultivation in the districts like Tiruchy, Karur, Namakkal, Erode and Salem.

“Since there were natural calamities and drought conditions prevailed for the past 10 years, the farmers of the region faced a series of difficulties and presently, the COVID-19 pandemic too affected the farmers and this has led the farmers to face severe loss. So the government which used to support the Corporates should have mercy on the farmers and save their livelihood,” said Ayilai Siva Suriyan, district secretary of Tamil Nadu Farmers Association affiliated to the CPI.

Siva Suriyan urged the government to write off the crop loan or provide a moratorium on EMIs for one year so that the farmers could revive from their present state of losses, he added.
