21 deaths reported, rising mortality shocks State
The highest spike in deaths due to COVID-19 was reported in Tamil Nadu on Tuesday with 21 more losing their battle. In an alarming rise, as many as 100 deaths have been reported in the State within one week.

The State, which had 208 deaths on June 3, crossed the 300-mark on Tuesday with the death toll climbing to 307. With 1,685 more cases, the State has crossed the 34,000 mark and recorded 34,914 cases. As many 36 people from other States and countries tested positive in the past 24 hours. Chennai recorded as many as 1,243 cases. Total cases reported in the city now stands at 24,545.
Among other districts, Chengalpattu reported 158 cases, Tiruvallur recorded 90 and Kancheepuram had 32 new cases. Several districts, including Tiruvannamalai, Dindigul, Nagapattinam, Vellore, Thoothukudi, Tiruneveli and Tiruvarur reported positive cases. With more than 70 per cent deaths being reported in patients with underlying co-morbidities, deaths are also being reported in patients below 60 years. As many as 9 out of 21 deaths reported on Tuesday were below the age of 60. In the past 100 deaths reported in Tamil Nadu, 47 of the deceased were below 60 years. On Tuesday alone, six deaths were reported in private hospitals, while 15 of them were reported in several government healthcare facilities across the State. As many as 16 deceased had underlying comorbidities, while 5 of them did not have any such conditions.
