The number of cases are increasing in private hospitals too as government facilities are struggling to accommodate the growing number of patients.

Of the fresh positive cases, Chennai alone accounted for 1,116 with the State capital’s aggregate touching a whopping 19,826. Continuing with the trend of a new high everyday, Tamil Nadu on the sixth straight day reported 1,000 plus cases.

Due to the rising cases, the Health Department is creating an online portal with 30 designated private hospitals. “The online portal will help public get information on availability of beds in private hospitals and how many are occupied,” said Health Minister C VijayaBaskar. A large number of patients who tested positive have complained of inadequate bed facilities, ICUs and ventilators in private hospitals. A total 900 beds are occupied in several private hospitals across the State currently, the Minister said. He added that the cost of testing for COVID-19 in private facilities has been fixed at Rs 3,000,” he said.

At present, TN has 12,697 active cases with 861 people getting discharged on Friday and in total 15,762 have got cured of the illness. Also, 800 plus recoveries in a single day is the highest in the past 10 days. The deaths of eight men and four women, who succumbed to the virus, were reported on Friday and the toll includes a 44-year-old woman with chronic kidney disease and hypertension, the bulletin said. Seven of the deaths were recorded in private hospitals. Chengalpattu recorded 90 new cases, while Tiruvallur reported 70.

Offices ask workers from containment zones for ‘no coronavirus’ proof

With most private companies getting back to normal work patterns now, employees in containment areas and those who tested COVID positive earlier but recovered have been asked to show medical certificates that state they are COVID negative to join work. But Health Department officials and Corporation officials say there is no such system of certifying an individual free of COVID-19.

Monisha G (name changed), a resident of Manali, is a software engineer in the city. She tested positive last month and is ready to join work after treatment and the 14-day quarantine. However, her employer wants a certificate stating she doesn’t have the disease and doesn’t pose a threat to her colleagues. Another employee at Ramanujan IT Park, Dev Kumar, who is a resident of Royapuram, says that he had to test for COVID-19 at a private laboratory after his employer asked him to produce a certificate. “Royapuram had many cases and after offices have partially started operating, my employer asked me to produce a certificate stating I was negative for COVID-19. The government hospitals refused to conduct the tests as I have no symptom nor history of contact. I later got tested at a private laboratory for Rs 4,500,” said Dev.

When contacted, the Directorate of Public Health and Preventive Medicine Dr T S Selvavinayagam said that Health Department officials will not issue any such certificate. “Testing is done twice to ensure that the person has tested negative for COVID-19 before discharge. The medical report is the only confirmation given to an individual that states that he/she is negative for COVID-19,” said Dr Selvavinayagam.
