Elephant death: NGT forms joint panel to avoid man-animal conflict

The southern bench of the National Green Tribunal has taken suo motu cognizance over the pregnant elephant’s death in Kerala and issued notice to various State Forest Department officials on Friday and formed a joint committee to file a report to avoid such incidents in the future.

Justice K Ramakrishnan and expert member Saibal Dasgupta, before whom the case was taken up through video conferencing said, “To ascertain the real state of affairs and also steps to be taken to protect wildlife and minimise man-animal conflict in future, we feel it appropriate to appoint a joint committee to submit a factual report including the long term management plan to avoid such recurrences in future.”

The bench wanted details of investigation, arrest and recovery of any compensation as per rules from the persons who are responsible for the incident, in the report.

The committee would look into whether there is any scheme to avoid such tragedies and what is the stage of its implementation, how effective it is and whether any further improvement will have to be made.

The tribunal also directed the committee to submit the report within a month along with suggestions and recommendations.
