The agitating workers alleged that they have registered online four days ago, but haven’t received any information on their travel. Protesting against the delay, more than 200 workers staying in ‘Palayakadu’ area resorted to road block causing traffic disruptions.
On receiving information, the Tirupur North police arrived and convinced the migrants to withdraw their protest and leave the spot. Similarly, more than 100 migrant workers hailing from Jharkhand and working in a mill attempted to rally towards Tirupur on Palladam-Dharapuram Road from Kallakinaru area seeking to allow them to go to their home towns. However, officials of the Revenue Department and Palladam police stopped them and sent them back promising to arrange for their travel.
G Sampath, general secretary of CITU, faulted the administration for the delay in sending the workers to their home towns. “Workers were asked to register online for their travel. But only those who grew restless and resort to protests were prioritised over others. Things need to be streamlined and their basic requirements should be fulfilled to avoid similar protests,” he said.
