TNCC announces Rs 1 crore to bring back Tamil workers
Tamil Nadu Congress Committee (TNCC) on Monday announced that it would pay Rs 1 crore to bear the transportation cost incurred to bring back Tamil Nadu migrant workers stranded in other States.
Chennai
TNCC president K S Alagiri made the announcement a day after his party national president Sonia Gandhi declared that the Pradesh committees of the Congress would bear the transportation cost of migrant workers.
Alleging that the Union government has not understood the simple fact that stranded migrant workers would find it impossible to bear the transportion cost, Alagiri said, “Hence, it has been decided to contribute Rs 1 crore from the trust of the state Congress to the Chief Minister. I kindly request the Chief Minister to use the fund exclusively to bring back Tamils stranded in other States.” Congratulating the announcement, former union finance minister P Chidambaram tweeted, “Congress president’s decision to direct PCC’s to bear the cost of rail transport for migrant workers is a historic decision. Puts the Government of India to shame.”
