    Teachers from the Government Adi Dravidar Welfare High School in Thanjavur on Tuesday discharged a different duty, an ‘essential’ service at this time.

    All the teachers pooled up money, bought grocery and gave it to students’ parents, mostly daily wage workers, who were struggling to make both ends meet as they don’t get any job owing to the lockdown.

    The Government AD Welfare High School in Manojipatti near Thanjavur has been functioning with nine staff and 198 students on rolls. Since their parents do not have a regular employment, all the families were struggling even to earn the daily bread and the everyday necessities. Though the state government has extended some assistance, most of the families have been passing the days in starvation.

    The information was brought to the notice of the teachers of the AD school, who decided to help their students and their families at this time of distress. All the nine teachers made significant contribution and arranged essential commodities, including 10 kg rice and cooking materials required for as many as 50 families.

    On Tuesday, the teachers brought the essential items to the school, called on the 50 families and handed over the materials to the parents in the presence of Headmaster Chandra Mouli, CEO Ramakrishnan and AD Welfare

    Officer Thamarai Manavalan. While addressing the familiies, the headmaster said, all of us knew that these students could get food only when their parents go for work each day. Due to the lockdown, all have lost their jobs and led a miserable life.

    So, the teachers decided to extend necessary help to them.

    “Initially, we have managed to distribute food and other articles to 50 families. Steps are being initiated to soon distribute food items to the remaining families also,” Chandra Mouli said.families soon,” Chandra Mouli said.
