Send lockdown violators to prison, says HC

Observing that only by staying indoors we will be able to help doctors, health workers and police personnel who are working round the clock to battle the virus threat, the Madras High Court on Wednesday held it is open to the police to arrest motorists or seize the vehicles found roaming after 1 pm without valid reason.

A division bench comprising Justice N Kirubakaran and Justice R Hemalatha observed this while ordering notice to the Health Secretary on a plea seeking 100 per cent testing of all persons who were exempt from the lockdown and were performing services involving public contact and to complete the same before the completion of the lockdown.

The bench, on hearing the plea through video conferencing, also suo motu impleaded the Ministry of Home Affairs. However, the bench, while directing the police to arrest those involved in violating Section 144, sought them to enquire/ inform the employers of the violators (government or private employee) about the violation made by them
