‘Disinfectant tunnel’ in Tirupur to prevent corona virus spread
To prevent the spread of COVID-19, a ‘disinfectant tunnel’ has been set up at the vegetable market in Tirupur district.
Coimbatore
People will be sprayed with disinfectants while passing through the tunnel at the Thennampalayam market, flocked by huge crowds even at the time of lockdown.
The tunnel has been developed by S Venkatesh, who runs a dyeing unit in Tirupur, jointly with the support of district administration. Tirupur Collector K Vijayakarthikeyan inspected the tunnel, which turned out to be an instant hit, as it came into operation from Wednesday.
“I was browsing the internet to find out different strategies adopted across the globe to fight COVID when I came across the disinfectant tunnel being used in Turkey,” said Venkatesh.
Venkatesh built the tunnel at an expense of Rs one lakh. It is about 16 feet in length and five feet in breadth. Water mixed with disinfectants is kept in a tank nearby the tunnel and the disinfectant will be sprayed on people for about five seconds. They do not face any irritation in eyes as chorine (hydrochloride) is added with water for spraying,” he added.
Authorities are now planning to set up another such tunnel in the exit way of the market. Requests have also come for setting up tunnels in other busy spots in the city.
