7 workers die in Chippiparai cracker unit blast
As many as seven workers, including six women, died in a blast at a unit after fancy cracker raw materials exploded at Chippiparai near Sattur in Virudhunagar district on Friday afternoon. Fire and Rescue Service personnel doused the blaze after struggling for two hours.

It is said, a cracker unit owned by Ganesan from Vellyapuram near Sattur has been functioning at Chippiparai in which as many as 30 workers were involved in cracker manufacturing. Despite the cracker unit functioning with proper permission through the revenue department, it is said, the unit has no permission to make fancy crackers.
On Friday, the workers were involved in making fancy crackers. Unexpectedly, the raw materials had friction that resulted in a heavy blast and as a result as many as 13 compartments were totally damaged and seven workers who were trapped died.
The deceased were identified as Rani (42), Jaya Bharathi (45), Pathrakali (33), Veluthayee (34), Tamarai Selvi (32), Thangammal (39) and Murugaiah (49). While, Subramanian, Ponnuthayee, Subbammal, Ayyammal, Madasamy, Pechiammal, Murugalakshmi and Jayaraman sustained severe injuries.
On information, the fire personnel from Sivakasi, Kazhugumalai an Vembakkottai rushed to the spot and doused the fire after struggling for two hours. The injured were rushed to Kovilpatti GH and they are undergoing treatment. Their condition is said to be serious.
Meanwhile, the Superintendent of Police P Perumal, RDO (Sattur) Kalimuthu and other officials visited the spot. Ezhayirampannai police registered a case and are investigating.
