Two parks to come up at closed Saduperi yard in Vellore
Entertainment-starved residents of Vellore City Corporation will soon get a sensory park and a toddlers’ park once the accumulated garbage amounting to two lakh tonnes is cleared from the closed dump yard at Saduperi, according to official sources.
Vellore
Revealing this to DT Next, officials said an equipment from Finland for mechanical segregation of garbage at Saduperi through a project, estimated to cost Rs 13.65 crore and to be undertaken by a private contractor, had reached the Chennai Kattupalli Port via Dubai and Colombo and was expected to reach the city on Tuesday.
Stating that lack of berthing facilities had resulted in the load being diverted to Colombo, officials said it would take one month for the plant to be set up. Once this is completed “we hope to start actual operations from April 14, Tamil New Year’s Day, tentatively.”
While the NGT (National Green Tribunal) had ordered the closure of the dump yard following local residents complaining of health issues due to accumulated garbage smouldering, officials said the equipment would segregate 800 tonnes of garbage during an eight-hour working day.
While compost would be sold to local farmers at Rs 1,000 for 25 kilos of fertilizer while RDF (Refuse Derived Fuel which includes combustible material like plastic) would be sent to two cement factories in Ariyalur district with the local body already signing an agreement.
“Once the area is clear of garbage, we plan to undertake the park projects as the city presently lacks such facilities. Its location near the Saduperi irrigation tank which when filled with water will become an ideal entertainment spot as it is located at the edge of the town,” officials said.
The planning will start in earnest once mechanical segregation of garbage starts, officials said, adding that this would include drawing up the DPR (Detailed Project Report) to seek funds from the Tamil Nadu government.
