    High Court restricts functioning,to hear only urgent cases

    The Madras High Court and its bench at Madurai are all set to restrict its functioning only to hearing urgent cases as a precautionary measure against the spread of coronavirus following representations by various advocate outfits to Chief Justice AP Sahi on Monday.

    Sources indicated that the Chief Justice, who held a meeting with both the Chief Secretary and Health Secretary in this regard is expected to make an announcement over the issue on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the Madras Bar Association in a statement said following the administrative committee meeting presided by the Chief Justice was held, it is preliminary decided to post only admission and urgent motion cases and not to post the final hearing cases in the list. The above arrangement is being made to decongest the court premises and to avoid any adverse impact due to coronavirus, the statement said. It also noted that the High Court also requested the members of All Bar Associations to reduce the usage of the Association premises and advised to keep only the library hall for use. This arrangement is made for the next two to three weeks, the statement issued by MBA secretary M Baskar said. State Advocate General Vijay Narayan, Madras Bar Association (MBA) president and senior counsel ARL Sunderasan and the MHAA president Mohanakumar were among those who met the Chief Justice in his chamber before the commencement of court proceedings. Meanwhile, the Bar Council of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry has also appealed for preventive measures in the High Court and subordinate court premises all over Tamil Nadu and Puducherry.
