Manithaneya Jananayaga Katchi leader and Nagapattinam MLA Thamimun Ansari, who was denied a chance by Speaker P Dhanapal to raise issues related to National Population Register in the Assembly on Wednesday, staged a sit-in protest at the state Secretariat. However, the MLAs later dispersed after raising slogans against the NPR and the CAA mooted by the BJP-led Centre.
Earlier in the day, DMK president MK Stalin demanded Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami and his Cabinet colleagues to follow states like Bihar and Kerala to adopt a resolution opposing the implementation of NPR and NRC.
To this, Revenue Minister RB Udhayakumar said that the state was carrying out only the Census operations along with three other queries to supplement the NPR process. There is no need for the minorities to panic and the AIADMK government would protect the minorities as always, the Minister said. Chief Minister Palaniswami and Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam also assured that there was no threat for the minorities in the state and said that there was no need for a resolution in this regard. Opposing this, the DMK led by Stalin staged a walkout.
