The Salem police on Wednesday arrested 1,100 members of various Muslim outfits for resorting to ‘kudiyerum porattam’ (settling down protest) in the district collector office demanding the State government to pass a resolution against implementing Citizenship Amendment Act, National Population Register and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in the Assembly

The protesters came on a procession from Kottai grounds to collector office carrying pillows, bed spreads and vessels to settle down in the collector office premises. In view of the protest, a three tire security was in place at the collector office and more than 300 cops were deployed to prevent any untoward incidents.

When the protesters attempted to enter the collector office, the police blocked them with barricades triggering tension. Following this, they sat on a protest in front of the collector office for about an hour.

Members of various Islamic organisations were on a continuous protest over the last 24 days at Kottai grounds against the controversial act.

Traffic was affected for a while on the spot due to protests. As talks failed the police arrested the protesting members of Muslim outfits.

Meanwhile, in Tirupattur district, nearly 100 shops in the busy area of Vaniyambadi town downed their shutters as a reaction to Revenue Minister RB Udayakumar’s statement in the Assembly. On Wednesday, Revenue Minister informed the Assembly that the State would not pass any resolution against the central government’s controversial Citizenship (Amendment) Act.

Meanwhile, security at Labour Minister Nilofer Kafeel’s home was increased fearing a backlash from the community. The rest of Muslim dominated Tirupattur district remained calm.
