Sivaganga 2009 poll case: PC appears before HC

Congress leader and former Union Minister P Chidambaram appeared before the Madras High Court on Wednesday for cross-examination in a case challenging his victory from the Sivaganga Parliamentary constituency in 2009 by a margin of 3,354 votes.

The cross examination transpired before Justice Pushpa Sathyanarayana when the counsel appearing for RS Raja Kannappan, the AIADMK candidate and former minister who had challenged Chidambaram’s election. The plea has been posted for further hearing to March 9. The election plea filed by Raja Kannappan, which has been pending for over 10 years, had levelled various allegation of electoral malpractice against Chidambaram.


However, during the hearing that transpired in 2012 by the portfolio judge then only two paragraphs wherein Chidambaram was accused of using the services of officials of nationalised banks to ensure his victory was struck down. The judge then had pointed out that details like the names of the banks and the officials and the place where they had been enlisted for poll duty was not mentioned in the election petition.
