As rumours were spreading among the people that eating the meat of broiler chicken would end up in contracting the deadly COVID-19, the Poultry Owners Association across the central region met on Tuesday and demanded the state government to create an awareness and initiate action against those who spread such fake information.

A few weeks ago, rumours spread via social media that there was an outbreak of COVID-19 in various western districts of Tamil Nadu through the poultry farms and the rumours had also warned those who consume the deadly COVID -19 contracted chicken would soon be infected and the news advised the people to consume vegetarian food rather than eating the meat.

This news had, however, reduced sale of chicken to at least 50 per cent and thus the rate also declined deep low. Subsequently, the Poultry Owners Association of Tiruchy, Karur, Pudukkottai, Perambalur and Ariyalur organised a regional level meeting in Tiruchy and discussed the issue.

Association president Govindan, who chaired the meeting, told the reporters that the state government should initiate action against those who spread the fake information to the people. Govindan said that the poultry owners lost their livelihood as the people are frightened to buy chicken for consumption.

The association resolved to organise a statewide protest demanding action against those who spread fake information through social media. They stressed that they had found no such virus in their respective poultry farm and it was safe to consume the meat.
