    CM to lay stone for medical colleges in Ramnad, Virudhunagar today

    Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami is all set to lay the foundation for the much-awaited government medical colleges in Ramanathapuram and Virudhunagar on Sunday.

    The key infrastructure facilities for medical college, hospital buildings and staff quarters would come up on 22 acres of land near Ramanathapuram Collectorate at an estimated cost of Rs 345 crore. Union Health and Family Welfare Minister Harsh Vardhan is expected to preside over the programme, which would be graced by Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, State Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar and ministers from various portfolios, sources said. While the medical college would be constructed at a cost of Rs 125.01 crore, hospital buildings would be built at a cost of Rs 150.01 crore. Besides, staff quarters would be built at a cost of Rs 69.98 crore.


    The foundation-laying for the facilities is scheduled at 10 am on the premises of Ramnad Collectorate. Moreover, the Chief Minister is also scheduled to lay foundation stone for various development projects for the benefit of the people on the occasion. Further, around 21,000 beneficiaries would receive welfare assistance as part of the programme through various schemes. The District Administration has made elaborate arrangements ahead of the programme. Superintendent of Police M Rajarajan (in-charge) of Ramanathapuram, said police force comprising two Deputy Inspector General of Police, five SPs, 12 ADSPs and 3,000 police personnel were on alert.


    In Virudhunagar, the foundation-laying ceremony for the government medical college building is scheduled at 3 pm on the Collectorate premises.


    With all necessary infrastructure facilities, the medical college would come up on 22 acres of land at an estimated cost of Rs 380 crore. Besides, foundation for development projects including Tamirabarani- Seevalaperi combined drinking water scheme at a cost of Rs 234 crore to benefit people of Virudhunagar, Sivakasi, Sattur and Aruppukkottai, Tamirabarani combined water scheme at a cost of Rs 444.71 crore to cater to the basic needs of people in Aruppukkottai, Sattur and Virudhunagar would be laid. Besides, welfare scheme assistance would be given to around 22,300 beneficiaries on the occasion, sources said.
