Govt allots rental house in city to Nallakannu
To put down the controversy over taking away a tenement allotted to senior CPI leader R Nallakannu, the state government on Thursday allotted a rental house for the leader in Nandanam.

“Yes, the state has allocated a rental house to Nallakannu,” said a top official attached to Tamil Nadu Housing and Urban Development Department, on request of anonymity.
State government was caught in a controversy when the officials from Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) issued notice to Nallakannu to vacate the TNHB house that he was residing in T Nagar, in May 2019. Politicians cutting across party lines condemned the state government for asking Nallakannu to vacate his house and demanded the government to provide a house immediately.
Government justified the action by saying that the house in which Nallakannu was residing for more than 12 years was built in 1953 and the building was weak. The government also said that the building will be demolished and a new building for TNHB will be built.
After he was asked to vacate, Nallakkanu was residing with his daughter. Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Housing and Urban Development O Panneerselvam had already assured that Nallakannu would be given a housing unit and as assured Nallakannu has been allotted a housing unit in Nandanam.
Sources in the Housing Department said, “A house has been allotted in TNHB quarters and the rent will be nominal for Nallakannu. However, it is up to Nallakannu to accept the house or to reject the offer.”
