The dam which became operational in 2008, serves 47 irrigation tanks in 40 villages of Polur, Chengam, Kalasapakkam, Thandarampattu and Kil Pennathur taluks of the district. The authorities have also sent another proposal at the cost of Rs 1.75 crore to strengthen the bund of the dam by preventing soil erosion, officials added.

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments Department Minister Sevoor S Ramachandran and Collector KS Kandasamy along with officials released water from the dam for five days on Wednesday. Though the dam has a full tank level (FTL) of 55 feet and a water spread area of 700 million cubic feet (mcft), it has only 35 feet of water as on date. However, “Officials okayed release of water for five days in a bid to recharge the ground water in 795 acres of land for which around 240 cft water will be released daily,” Collector Kandasamy revealed.
