Centre belittles potential of Keezhadi: Madurai MP

While Keezhadi, a traditional archaeological site dating back to the Sangam Age, was known for its historical significance and made its presence felt on the global map, the Centre is trying to belittle its potential, Madurai MP Su Venkatesan said on Sunday.

With all scientific data and ancient artefacts unearthed after various phases of excavations at Keezhadi, it remains the symbol of ancient Tamils, but the Centre has shifted its focus to Adichanallur in Thoothukudi district.

The importance should have given to Keezhadi rather than Adichanallur, where the Centre, during the recent Budget session, announced a site museum, the MP told reports at his party office here.

Further, the MP said the Centre had no consideration for people of Tamil Nadu. During the Union Budget 2020-21, presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitaraman, 10 rail projects were announced, but allocating just Rs1,000 to each project. Over the last 10 years, funds to the tune of Rs12,000 crore were earmarked for the railway projects in Tamil Nadu. But, it’s very unfortunate this time. However, funds to the tune of Rs 7,000 crore were announced for new projects under the limits of Northern Railway headquartered at Uttar Pradesh during the budget.

Further, the MP said in terms of GST payments, Tamil Nadu was the highest contributor among other states in India. Despite such achievement, the Centre is ignoring Tamil Nadu.
