5,543 passengers screened in TN: Vijaya Baskar

A total of 799 people who have a travel history from China and the countries with positive cases of Coronavirus have been screened at the airports across the state, said Health Minister C Vijaya Baskar on Sunday. Currently, a total of 5,543 passengers have been screened in Tamil Nadu and screening centres have been opened in Coimbatore, Madurai airports and Tiruchy airports besides Chennai.

After visiting the testing laboratory at Kings Institute on Sunday, Health Minister pointed out that there are 10 patients who have been kept under observation in RGGGH, while two other patients are in government hospitals in Trichy and Ramanathapuram respectively.


The Chinese national, who has been admitted at the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH), landed at Chennai airport at around 1.30 am on Sunday in a Malaysian airlines and had symptoms of cold, cough and fever on arrival. The person is said to be a resident of Guangzhou in China. After the thermal screening, he was referred to RGGGH.


The hospital authorities at RGGGH said that the patient is stable and doing well now. “We have kept the suspected person under observation at the isolation ward for Coronavirus at the hospital. The samples will be taken and sent for testing to check for Coronavirus,” said Dr R Jayanthi, dean, Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital.


Meanwhile, another person travelling from Singapore to Trichy arrived at Airport on Sunday morning 2.50 am. The passenger was reported to have mild fever, which is suspected to be due to anxiety. However, he is kept under observation at the Trichy GH in the isolation ward and he does not show any asymptomatic symptoms also. No positive cases has been confirmed in Tamil Nadu yet.

12 people in Tamil Nadu under observation
With a Chinese national who arrived here with fever getting admitted at the isolation ward at Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital on Sunday, the number of people who are now under observation in TN has gone up to 12. The 47-year-old Chinese national was admitted to Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGGH) after he was reported to have fever while screening at the Chennai airport. Another passenger from Singapore arrived in Tiruchy with mild fever and has been admitted to Mahatama Gandhi Memorial Government Hospital. Sources, however, said they are stable. Health minister C Vijaya Baskar on Sunday clarified that all the patients who have been kept in isolation wards are only under observation and none has any clinical symptoms of Coronavirus (Wuhan). “So far, there is not a single patient in TN with coronavirus,” he clarified.
