According to sources, the officials during a baggage check of passengers from Kuala Lumpur in the early hours on Wednesday, intercepted Safarnisha (35) of Ramanathapuram upon suspicion. She was subsequently taken into custody and upon a check, found the woman to be carrying 1.443 kg of gold jewellery estimated to be worth Rs 56.38 lakh in the form of bangles, chains and rings. The officials then seized the gold. On holding inquiries, the woman claimed that she was approached by agents in Malaysia to carry the valuables and she denied knowing that it was an offence to carry gold beyond the permitted quantity. The officials stated that the seizure of such a haul from a single woman passenger was a rare incident in the history of the city airport.
