Normal life suffered to a marginal extent as the busy commercial areas in Tirupattur town were deserted on Saturday due to shutdown protest by shopkeepers, who expressed their solidarity with those protesting demanding the withdrawal of the Citizens (Amendment) Act that was recently passed in Parliament.
Nearly 1,000 people, including members of trade bodies, took out a procession from Alamaram Street to Jinnah Street passing through all the thorough fares of the town.
The participants raised slogans against the Central government and against CAA demanding that the Act be revoked. About 800 police personnel were posted on security duty to prevent any untoward incidents and the day passed off peacefully.
Meanwhile, BJP workers lead by national secretary Karu Nagarajan staged a demonstration in support of the CAA at the Chittoor bus stop at Katpadi.
Their leaders denounced the Congress and its TN ally the DMK for creating a wrong impression of the CAA which was not against Indian Muslims. They demanded that both parties stopthe agitation.
Members and office bearers from various Hindu outfits also took part inthe demonstration.
