More than 500 members of the Valluvan Community, including 50 women, who were classified as Hindu Valluvan community in the religion status, participated in the demonstration held in front of the Valluvar Kottam on Sunday.
During the demonstration, they shouted slogans condemning the desecration and urged the State government to take action and arrest the miscreants immediately.
WVKS president S Anandan, who is also the president of the TNVCCC, and Youth Wing leader Venugopal said the demonstration was also to urge the State government to take steps to maintain all the Thiruvalluvar statues in the State and provide adequate protection to them to prevent such incidents in future.
Venugopal, who along with others members later visited the Valluvar Kottam, also wanted the government to take up more maintenance works to restore back to its pristine glory.
He also urged the government to give due recognition to the Hindu Valluvan community, which has a strength of more than 10 lakh members in the State.
The desecration of the Statue created a political furore in the State and the BJP tried to saffronise it by posting a picture of the Saint poet in Saffron robes in its website, drawing the ire of various political parties.
