Unusually, people took to the site and witnessed the scenario in awe. Many from Mukkani and neighbouring Authoor took selfie after standing in front of the seemingly ancient structure on Wednesday.
In the days of yore, natural seaport existed at Korkai, which was earlier known as the centre of trade and the important port of the Pandiya kingdom. Korkai is a part of Srivaikuntam taluk, which was the biggest taluk in those days when Thoothukudi was integrated with Tirunelveli.
Since Mukkani is on the way to Srivaikuntam, these structures seemed remains of a pre-historic palatial building, Barathi, a social activist from Srivaikuntam said.
Officials from the Department of Archaeology should inspect this site and conduct a study on the remains of ancient structures found lying on the riverbanks.
It should not be taken lightly and the archaeological experts should collect samples from this site and take it for carbon testing to find its real existence of the age.
Petitions citing this demand were submitted to the district administration and the Superintendent of Archaeology, he said. During the ancient period, international trade relationship existed between the Pandiya Kings in India and merchants in Rome. Since Korkai was known for its pearl fishery, it attracted the Roman royalty, Bose, Professor of History, said.
