As many as 55 people in the district, who were trapped in flash floods as River Noyyal is in spate, were rescued by the fire and rescue services personnel on Friday, sources said.

Following torrential rains here, river Noyyal flows in full vigour and is reportedly flooded after a period of forty years.

The rising waters entered Aathumedu, a residential locality located near Perur, trapping several families unaware. On receiving information, a large team of fire and rescue services personnel rushed to the spot and brought the people in the area out to safety by using ropes. The rescued people were then sheltered in safer upper regions. Meanwhile, the heavy flow in Noyyal is in turn filling up the lakes in the district.

Similarly the Bhavani river is in spate as 48,500 cusecs of water had been released from Pillur dam as around 6 am on Friday. Meanwhile, a team of 159 State disaster management personnel arrived in Mettupalayam here to attend to emergencies. Around 1300 people were subsequently evacuated from flooded areas and sheltered in temporary shelters in the district. Flood alert continued for the fifth consecutive day. District Collector K Rajamani visited the flooded areas in the outskirts here.
