I cast my vote only in Vellore, not in Chennai, clarifies Collector
All eyes were on A Shanmugasundaram, district collector and returning officer of the Vellore parliamentary constituency, which went to polls on Monday, as there were murmurs in the district that he voted twice in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
Vellore
The ‘talk’ of the town was that Shanmgasundaram voted twice – first in Chennai, when he was stationed during the general elections held on April 18 and the second time in Monday’s parliamentary polls in Vellore after taking charge as the district collector more than a month ago.
Shanmugsundaram, however, clarified to DT Next that he did not cast his vote while in Chennai on April 18. Since he was staying away from his family in the government guest house, his name was not included in the Chennai voter list.
“A person can vote anywhere in the country as long as his name is mentioned on the voter list where he has been posted. After coming to Vellore, my name was included on the voter list here and hence I exercised my franchise here,” Shanmugsundaram said.
“A person’s name cannot be mentioned in two voters list in different places simultaneously,” he added.
