According to police, Muhammed Ibrahim, a native of Tirunelveli district and settled at Nesavalar Colony in Tirupur, had posted his mobile phone number online claiming to be the police commissioner of Tirupur city.
He is good in mimicry and had spoken to callers in the voice of the top cop. The accused took money from public who called his number to get redressal for their grievances. However, his dubious tricks finally came to light following a complaint by Vinod Kumar (29), a van driver from Tirunelveli.
The complainant had called up Ibrahim believing him to be the Commissioner, and sought his help to find his wife who left him over family issues and moved to Tirupur.
Police said Ibrahim spoke in a confident manner, and asked Vinod to pay Rs 8,200 in different installments to help locate his wife. Recently, Vinod Kumar visited Tirupur Commissioner Office and realised that he was duped.
Based on his complaint, the police booked a case and launched a hunt for the accused, who went into hiding. Special teams of police picked him up from Tirupur railway station.
Inquiries with him revealed that Ibrahim was a Class three drop out and was working in a textile firm in Tirupur. Ibrahim took to the fraudulent ways after he was sacked from job over some reasons a few months ago.
The accused confessed to have received money from many persons by impersonating the police Commissioner. Further investigations are on.
