Four-member gang assaults man for videographing sand smuggling, 2 held

Acting on a complaint from the victim’s father, police have registered a case and two of the four members of the gang.

Sources said that Kumarasamy (40), a resident of Mukkombu, along with his brother Balasubramanian (43) and their nephews Saravanan (26) from Thottiyam and Raja (28) from Kulithalai regularly quarried sand from the Cauvery bed at Thiruparaithurai near Mukkombu and used to smuggle it to various places.

While the four smugglers were stealing sand from a spot on the riverbed during late hours on Wednesday, M Krishna Kumar (24) who spotted them started videographing their action.

On seeing this, Kumarasamy and his relatives confronted Krishna Kumar asking why he was recording their act and reportedly manhandled him.

Krishna Kumar sustained severe injuries in the attack by the sand smugglers.

Since the location where Krishna Kumar was lying injured was a secluded place and as it was dark, no one noticed him immediately.

As Krishna Kumar did not return home for a long time, his father Muthuraj grew suspicious went in search of him.

Later, he found Krishnakumar lying with injuries on the banks of the Cauvery at Thiruparaithurai. Krishna Kuma was immediately rushed to a hospital.

Later, Muthuraj lodged a complaint with the Jeeyapuram police against Kumarasamy and his relatives as informed by Krishna Kumar.

Based on his complaint, the Jeeyapuram sub Inspector Isaivani registered a case and arrested Kumarasamy and his nephew Raja.

Both were produced before the court. Subsequently, they were lodged in the central prison Tiruchy.

A manhunt has been launched nab the other two sand smugglers, who were involved in the assault of Krishna Kumar.
