The police identified the deceased as Durairaj (70) from Chinnakalipalayam near Mangalam, his son Gopalakrishnan (39) and daughter Selvi alias Ambika (42).

According to the police, Selvi, a divorcee with her son Ragunathan (22) were staying with Durairaj over the past few years.

In September last year, Ragunathan, however, reportedly committed suicide over love failure. Since then, Selvi and Durairaj, shocked by his passing, remained depressed.

Durairaj’s wife, Rajathi, had also passed away a few years ago, and that had made him feel lonely, according to sources. Adding to the grief, Durairaj’s son Gopalakrishnan, who was working in a textile firm, was unmarried.

Unable to get over the griefs, the trio decided to commit suicide and so locked themselves inside their house and hanged with a nylon rope on Monday, sources said. On hearing unusual noise, the neighbours checked the family’s house through the window and found them hanging. They then broke into the house and rushed the three people in an ambulance to Palladam Government Hospital.

Doctors, however, declared both Durairaj and Gopalakrishnan as having been brought dead, while Selvi was sent to Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital (CMCH) for further treatment. However, she too died without responding to treatment in the early morning hours on Tuesday.

On the day the trio reportedly committed suicide, Gopalakrishnan had visited the house of his other sister Shanthi, who had settled down with her family in Iduvai in the district, and parted with property documents and Rs 30,000 in cash.

Villagers and relatives were moved by an inconsolable Shanthi grieving over the loss of her family members.
