First level EVM checks start in Vellore
The first level check of EVMs to be used for the proposed Vellore Lok Sabha elections on August 5 commenced with the assistance of 30 Bharat Electronics Limited (BHEL) engineers at the regulated market on Monday.

The checks were undertaken in the presence of Collector A Shanmugasundaram and representatives of various political parties. The exercise which is expected to consume some days, includes 3,853 ballot units, 1,919 control units and 2,099 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines which are to be used by a total electorate numbering 14.26 lakh in the constituency, officials said. The electorate includes 6.98 lakh men voters, 7.28 female voters and another 102 third gender voters, they added.
While Gudiyattam (reserved) Assembly constituency accounts for the highest number of ballot units (754), control units (377) and VVPAT machines (450), Vellore constituency has the least number of ballot units (606) followed by KV Kuppam Assembly segment accounting for the lowest number of control units (303) and VVPAT machines (355) in the constituency.
Meanwhile, a total of seven persons filed their nominations for the Vellore Parliamentary seat before returning officer and Collector Shanmugasundaram on Monday. This brings the total of those who filed nominations to 17, including the official NDA candidate AC Shanmugam.
