    Chaos reigned at the medical counselling venue on Friday after MBC category candidates, who were called for counselling, were informed by the selection committee that the seats have been filled and they have been placed on wait list.

    Among the 36 witnesses named, it Originally, candidates from MBCs were called for counselling for seats available in various government medical colleges, including IRT Perundurai Medical College, Rajah Muthiah Medical College, ESIC Medical College and government quota seats in self-financing colleges and BDS seats in government dental college. When they reached the venue, the candidates were shocked to know from the selection committee that the seats have been filled up. This triggered a heated argument between candidates and counselling authorities forcing the selection committee to cancel the second session of counselling for MBC category scheduled at 4 pm on Friday.


    “The counselling scheduled for MBC category on Saturday stands cancelled,” said Dr G Selvarajan, additional director of Medical Education.


    Candidates and parents said that they had come to Chennai from several districts far and near and condemned the authorities for not giving proper information regarding the filling up of seats in advance. Pointing out that there has been an increase in the number of seats this year, the students wondered how there was shortage. They demanded seats in BDS course, which was rejected by the selection committee.


    A total of 2,176 candidates were called for counselling on Friday. Only 622 attended the process, of which only 334 were allotted seats under the State quota. Another 287 candidates were put on the waiting list.


    “The candidates called for the MBBS counselling for MBC category scheduled on Saturday at 9 am will now automatically be placed on the wait-list,” said Selvarajan


    While 90 seats were allotted to candidates in government colleges, 104 students received seat in self-financing college. One candidate was granted seat in ESIC College in K K Nagar, Chennai. Though no seats were allotted for BDS course in the government college in the State, 139 seats were allotted in the self-financing colleges. One government school student was also given MBBS seat on Friday.


    While all the seats in Madras Medical College have been filled up, one seat in Stanley Medical College and three in Kilpauk Medical College are yet to be allotted. A total of 260 MBBS seats, including 173 for SC category, 65 for SCA category and 22 for ST category, are available.
