Don’t accept or implement 10 pc quota, CPI urges Pondy govt
The Puducherry Unit of the Communist Party of India (CPI) on Thursday urged the government not to accept or implement the 10 percent reservation for Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) in the forward caste, which is against social justice.

In a statement here, CPI state secretary Saleem urged the government to convene an all-party meeting to discuss the issue as done in Tamil Nadu.
Recalling that 16 political organizations which are keen to uphold the social justice on May 6 submitted a memorandum to the government on the issue, Saleem said it came to know that the government is trying to implement 10 percent reservation for the EWS in Medical Education following an announcement by the Centre that seats in medical colleges would be enhanced if it is implemented.
He said that reservation is a fundamental rights granted by the constitution for those who are economically and socially deprived of their rights for hundreds of years.
Further the issue is pending before the Court and all depends on its judgement whether the reservation on the basis of economic status would be legally valid, he added.
The CPI leader also pointed out that 95 percent reservation is provided to SC, BC, MBC and ST in adjoining Tamil Nadu while, they are getting 50 percent reservation inPudcucherry.
Saleem also said that fixing Rs 8 lakh as the annual income for forward class people to declare them as economically weaker at a time when there is no census for themis not fitting.
