    TN to get 10K check dams to recharge groundwater level

    The State government will construct 10,000 mini check dams at a cost of Rs 312 crore to enhance groundwater resources and harvest storm water in rural areas, Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami announced in the Assembly on Wednesday.

    At a time when the State is facing one of its worst water crises, the CM, under the Assembly rule 110, said that check dams will come up across water channels and small streams flowing in rural pockets. The outlets of lakes and waterbodies will have the new check dams aimed to boost the local irrigation. Further, to enhance sanitation and reduce water pollution, the State will also build overhead water tanks and sinking water pits in rural regions at a cost of Rs 183.38 crore. 

    As part of the rural infrastructure development scheme, the government will re-lay 5,000 kilometers of roads at a cost of Rs 12,00 crore. Repair of roads and bridges damaged during cyclone Gaja will be taken up Nagappattinam and Tiruvarur at a cost of Rs 200 crore. The cyclone hit areas in Kodaikanal will also be covered, CM said.

    Palaniswami also announced that the Rs 11,000 crore target of loan disbursal for women Self Help Groups during 2018-19 was surpassed and Rs 11,449 crore loan was dispersed through banks. For the current fiscal, a target of Rs 12,500 crore has been set to aid the SHGs, he noted. 

    He also announced three new law colleges in Tamil Nadu to help students from backward and economically weaker sections. The colleges will be set up for Rs 9.52 crore and will begin functioning from 2019-20. A special officer will be appointed for every college to start preliminary work, he said.

    For the Registration Department, the CM also announced construction of 24 new sub registrar buildings at a cost of Rs 24 crores and an integrated commercial complex will be constructed in Trichy at a cost of Rs 23 crore, the CM added.
