DMK functionary, 5 others held for Ariyalur youth’s murder

According to sources, Saranraj (32) of Chettikuzhi village near Tirumanur in Ariyalur district, along with his wife Saradha, were travelling to his wife’s native place at Kallur village on Sunday when an unidentified gang reportedly waylaid the couple and assaulted them and later escaped in the cover of darkness.

Saranraj, who sustained severe injuries in the attack, died on the spot while his wife Saradha is battling for life after sustaining severe injuries. On seeing them, passersby rushed to the spot and rescued Saradha and took her to the government hospital while Saranraj’s body was retrieved and taken to the GH.

Meanwhile, the Keezhapazhuvur police registered a case and are holding investigations. During inquiries, the police found that there was a prolonged dispute between Saranraj and DMK union Secretary Jothivel’s son Poovarasan, and as a result he and his friends Suriya, Muthu alias Rajapandi, Ajith, Manikandan and Vijayakumar had waylaid the couple and murdered them.

Subsequently, the police arrested all the six persons on Tuesday. Further enquiries are on, the police said.
